Our History

1920

Established by the late Tan Soon Heng in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur.

1922

Relocated to Malacca.

1935

Extends production base to Ayer Hitam, Johore. Johore Pipe Company was established offering vitrified clay pipes for supply to the Public Works Department, and latex cups for the rubber estates in Johor.

1941

The Japanese Imperial Army invades Malaya, This marking the beginning of the Second World War in this part of the world.

1942

Marks the beginning of the tableware industry in our country as were encouraged by the Army to go into the production of tableware and various types of earthen containers after ceasing operation.

1951

The first to produce and supply vitrified clay pipes meeting British Standards 65.

1952

Development and production of sanitaryware for the Singapore Improvement Trust and Housing Trust of Malaya

1957

Our Late MD, Mr Tan Chong Cheng took over the helm from his late father and has since been the Managing Director of the Claytan Group until now.

1965

Clay Industries Sdn Bhd (CISB) was incorporated to strengthen Claytan’s lead in the vitreous china sanitary ware business.

1968

Claytan brought in foreign technology by installing the first British designed tunnel kiln in Malaysia to fire sanitary ware.

1973

Oriental Ceramics Sdn. Bhd. (OCSB) was incorporated to set up the first tableware factory in Malaysia to produce English Fine Earthenware to USA.

1977

First company in Malaysia to export tableware to The United States of America.

1980

Claytan started to manufacture sanitary ware under OEM arrangement for the Japan and UK market.

1983

JPC-Intan Sdn Bhd was incorporated to produce an advanced range of vitrified clay pipes.

1995

Claytan Fine China (Tableware) Sdn Bhd was incorporated specializing in the production of stoneware tableware and artware.

1996

Participated in the International Tableware Exhibition Frankfurt, Germany and exporting to Europe.

2002

A dedicated R&D Centre was built to upgrade research, development and designs of sanitary ware, tableware and vitrified clay pipes.

2007

A pioneer in Malaysia and the first in ASEAN to produce fine fireclay sinks and wash basins.

2011

5th factory is built, production capacity sanitaryware reached 1.5 million pieces pa.

2012

Successfully specified sanitaryware in Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA 2).

2013

Acquired epitome of finely crafted British sanitaryware factory, Silverdale, United Kingdom.

2014

New Office and showroom launched in Philippines.

2015

6th Manufacturing plant built & 96 years of Anniversary.
